From as early as I can remember, I’ve always had a passion for hair. I used to be fascinated by how hair laid after it was cut. I received my first shears when I turned 11 years old and began to practice on my Barbie dolls. As I got older, I was fortunate enough to have brave family and friends let me practice cutting their hair.

As I approached High School graduation, I began to search for the best cosmetology schools in my area and ultimately picked Hair By Stewarts in Davenport, Iowa. This particular school prepared future stylists and then placed them in their salons throughout the Midwest to ensure they’d became successful stylists.
After completing 2,100 hours behind the chair, I graduated in under a year. Over my ten year career at Hair By Stewarts, I worked my way up to a management position and then became a District Trainer. As a District Trainer, I trained stylists on how to promote themselves, advance in their technical skills and client services for 12 salons and continued to work as a stylist one day out of the week.
It was an exciting time to be part of Hair By Stewarts, they were the up and coming company for their time. The company helped me improve my technical skills but also understood the importance of being a great stylist as a whole. They brought in world-renowned courses developed by Zig Ziglar and Michael Cole which taught stylists how to live their best life as well as be profitable.
In 1995 the Stewart brothers began to sell their company. Also during this time Salon Suites was starting in Iowa. I was intrigued with the Salon Suites model because it allowed stylists to begin a career on their own and helped with all of the logistics. I learned a lot from my time there and decided to open my own salon, Hair Solutions, in 1997.

After opening Hair Solutions I spent all of my time and energy behind the chair. Educating was still a huge passion of mine but I set it aside for the time being to raise our kids. As the kids began to get older I encountered a new company at a hair show that changed my life. This company “spoke my language”. Their focus wasn’t just on training the techniques of how to cut hair or their products, but really cared about the business aspects and the stylist as a whole being. I made a mental note right then that if I was ever going to educate again, it would be for this man- Wayne Grund.
Wayne Grund founded Surface Hair in 2009, the same year my youngest graduated from High School. I felt like everything was coming together according to God’s timing. I knew I wanted to help bring Surface Hair to life, to be part of the movement of bringing healthier, safer and overall better products to stylists and consumers. I also wanted to help stylists become the best version of themselves and felt like working for Surface Hair would allow me to do just that! It was thrilling to get back into educating again!

I began my career with Surface Hair as one of their very first educators. Educating for Surface Hair, opened my eyes and helped me understand a new way of living to maximize my overall health. Not only did I begin to understand just how important healthy and safe hair products are, but it also peaked my interest into the world of nutrition and how our bodies function.

I am incredibly passionate about creating beautiful hair and using high performance products that respects our personal health and the earth. I also love to listen, encourage and help others to live an overall healthy lifestyle.
It has been such an incredible opportunity to work for a company that produces authentic hair care, skincare and continues to create new innovations to help stylists and their consumers. Over my last ten years working for Surface, I have received certifications in Fine and Thinning Hair, Curls, Master Core Cutting and the yearly trends. I have also received an award for being one of the Top 100 Surface Salons in the United States and Canada.
I’ve learned a lot over the past three decades of doing hair and am always striving to learn more. “My goal is not to be better than anyone else, but to be better than I used to be.” – Wayne Dyer. I am a student for life and look forward to sharing my knowledge with you!
