Tricks That Work for Styling Fine Hair
I personally know fine hair very well since that is my crown of glory.
Today I want to share with you insight on how to style your hair so you can have maximum volume! It involves using the right products, the right tools and catching the hair before it’s too dry. Does this sound complicated? It is absolutely easy!
Do Not Wash Hair Everyday
Washing your hair every day is not doing your hair any favors but ..but.. Yes, I know you lose volume, or you look like something the cat drug in when you wake up. Keep reading and you will find solutions. I promise!
On day one hair after you blow-dry I would put the Surface Dry Shampoo all around the hairline. Why on day one? It is not like any other dry shampoos since is helps naturally absorbs dirt and oil, kicks up volume and shine, leaving zero residue behind so that day two hair is so much better!
If you do use Surface products I guarantee you can freshen your locks the next day with the Styling Swirl Sea Salt Spray and your blow dryer. Add a burst of the dry shampoo around the edges and you are good to go. Your hair will look better on day 2 and 3!
Water Temperature
Let’s start with water temperature. Lukewarm will protect your color PLUS it will not dry out every precious strand of hair you have. Please turn down the temperature for your hair and if you need to turn it up for the body, go ahead. Remember your skin is the largest organ and it dries out too. Check out my October blog post for more information.
Shampoo & Conditioner
Use a shampoo and conditioner that is formulated for fine hair and will promote growth and/or volume. Yes, I did say conditioner! Please use a conditioner that is formulated for fine hair and don’t be scared it will make it too limp. My choices are Surface Awaken Shampoo & Conditioner if you are wanting your hair to grow faster and fuller. We need to stimulate the follicle with natural capsicum and menthol while gently cleanse with palm and coconut oil . The conditioner finishes the cleansing process so no need to be afraid of this conditioner.
Maybe you don’t need your hair to grow faster or fuller but just want amazing volume. My choice, hands down, would be Surface Char shampoo and conditioner. With activated charcoal powder and seaweed extract you receive maximum fullness!
Blow-Drying Techniques
Its all about blow-drying techniques. If your hair starts drying flat before you apply your styling product this could be a concern. Wrap hair in a towel to get the moisture out (this is when I apply my makeup) after unwrapping hair, apply styling products.
Low speed and medium heat are your friend for full and healthy hair. Use the concentrate nozzle, that comes with your blow-dryer. This will help lift from the scalp and concentrate the flow of the air in the correct spots. If you have a cool button that is a BONUS! Hit the cool button after you heat and dry the scalp to insure volume and no frizz. Hair needs to be 80% dry before you use a brush but remember using a brush can decrease volume if not used correctly.
How important are styling products to fine hair? It is everything!! We know that some products are too heavy, some glue stands together and others just dry hair out.
How do you know what styling products to use? I will list my go-to products that I know work-
Bassu Moisture Mist
Wet hair is very fragile and fine wet hair is VERY fragile so the first product I would use is the Bassu Moisture Mist. I DO NOT spray it onto my hair but in my hands and use my hands as a comb. Every tangle comes out and it helps keep the moisture in our hair with this ultra fine mist, leave-in conditioner that replenishes and retains moisture for driest of locks. Soothe, detangle, shine, protect with Babassu oil and Moringa oil!
Awaken Mist
Fine hair needs strength too so it can keep growing. I use five pumps of the Surface Awaken Mist into my palms and apply through my strands.
Awaken Thickening Spray
Now one of the most important products for our fine locks is the Awaken Thickening Spray. It DOUBLES the diameter of our hair! It is absolutely incredible. Spray around the hairline, bangs or everywhere you want to increase your hair diameter.
Awaken Mousse & Char Gel Mousse
Now it’s time to put on a product that gives us some hold without gluing hair stands together. You can’t go wrong with Awaken Mousse or the Char Gel Mousse for volume and a light hold that can be applied through the strands.
Char Blow Dry Paste, Reflect Styling Gel & Texture Paste
Do you need a little more hold on top? I would suggest the Char Blow Dry Paste, Reflect Styling Gel or Styling Texture Paste at the scalp only.
Styling Tool
What hot tool to use for straightening or curling fine hair? The most important factor is what setting it is on, using a heat protector and knowing if you want beach wave or a straighter look.
Heat Setting
Let’s talk about the heat settings. I good rule is to divide the settings into thirds and if you have baby fine hair stay within the first third. Example: if your iron goes to 450 degrees you may want to stay around 150 degrees but if your hair is stronger you may be able to go up to 300 degrees. Heat can damage your hair instantly if it is too hot and that my friends will give you an instant haircut. I love using the Char Finishing Spray as my protector. It helps hair up to 450 degrees and my fine locks need all the help they can get. After you have heated up your hair now it needs to cool for it to set, it is like using the cool button on the blow-dryer!
Beach Wave
If you have a beach wave going on, put a little Bassu Oil on your finger tips and run it through hair. This will insure shine, control and more moisture without weighing the hair down. How do I use hairspray is a question I get all the time. My reply is, lift and spray and use a hairspray for fine hair. My choices would be Awaken Hairspray for medium hold or Char Finishing Spray for light hold. Remember lift and spray. The product needs to go underneath at the scalp and not on top.
